Aug 10, 2012 · The record doesn't exist internally [**here the wildcard should kick in] then the DNS server doesn't find a record for that but sees a wildcard and forwards the query to an external DNS (root hint, google or any other). I saw on another non-MS forum someone saying this is not possible by Microsoft's DNS design but I'm not 100% sure.

I already use a Lua script with haproxy which takes care of automatically answering http-01 ACME challenges, but to issue/renew a wildcard certificate you need to answer a dns-01 challenge. If you were to do the equivalent of a grep over nslookup a simple regex like "nslookup *.com" would have to make trillions upon trillions of network calls just to check all of the possibilities within the first eight character spaces or so. Wildcard records don't override existing records (such as CNAME records) When you set a wildcard record, that record does not override any existing sub-domain records in the zone (zone is another term for all the DNS records associated with your domain). Here's an example: Above is a CNAME record and a wildcard A record.
